Jury: Caltrans 90% responsible for Atherton crosswalk fatality

A jury has found the Calif. Department of Transportation ninety percent responsible for the 2010 death of a 62-year-old man who was struck by a car in an El Camino Precise crosswalk in Atherton.

After a two-week trial in San Mateo County Superior Court, the jury on Jul 25 awarded the family of Chris Chandler $9.5 mill. in damages. The jury found the driver, Matthew Simon of Stanford, who was 69 at the time of the accident, ten percent responsible in the death of Mr. Chandler of Redwood City, who was struck in the crosswalk at Isabella Avenue on Thu Sep 30 2010

January and Courtney Chandler both teach at Menlo School in Atherton.
