Caltrans To Permanently Fix Hole Discovered On San Mateo Bridge

SAN MATEO – Starting Tue night, Caltrans crews will close 2 westbound lanes of the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge for 5 consecutive nights as they work to fix a hole that was discovered on the bridge.

The hole opened up last 30 days on the westbound deck and was exposing the Bay underneath the bridge, according to Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus.

After discovering the hole, crews initially installed a metal plate on the bridge deck. The repair, moreover was only temporary, Caltrans officials said.

The repairs will include putting in completely new concrete, whole new rebar, as well as adding supporting structures underneath the bridge, Haus said.
